Highlights from 1993 – The Year JDB Founded

A lot has changed in the past 10 years.  Take a look at some of the highlights of the year 1993 and see if you can remember the following.

World

  • Bill Clinton inaugurated as 42nd president.
  • February 26, World Trade Center bombed.  Attack was intended to topple the tallest tower onto its twin, but the attack failed and “only” 7 people were killed.
  • Standoff in Waco between FBI and Branch Davidians ends in tragedy.
  • John Wayne Bobbit became famous after his wife Lorena got busy with a knife.
  • Russia elects Borris Yeltsin.
  • Intel unveils the Pentium processor.
  • MS DOS 6.2 released.
  • Dow Jones closes above 3,500 for the first time (May 19, 1993), hits 3,793 before the end of the year.
  • Rudolph Guliani elected major of NYC.
  • Eighteen American Marines killed in fighting in Mogadishu Somalia.  This is the story retold in the motion picture “Blackhawk Down”.

Sports

  • The Cowboys beat the Bills in Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena 52 – 17.  Troy Aikman named the Most Valuable Player.
  • Chicago Bulls defeat the Phoenix Suns 4 games to 2 to win NBA championship.
  • Blue Jays defeat the Phillies 4 games to 2 to win World Series.

Culture

  • Academy Awards go to “Schindler’s List” (Best Picture & Director, Spielberg), Tom Hanks (Best Actor, “Philadelphia”) and Holly Hunter (Best Actress, “The Piano”).
  • Last broadcast of Cheers on NBC-TV.
  • Prince celebrates his birthday and changes his name to unpronounceable symbol.
  • Jurassic Park opens and sets box office weekend record of $502 million – top-grossing movie for the year.
  • David Letterman switches from NBC to CBS.
  • Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Tag Team’s “Whoop There It Is” top the charts.
